HISTORY
Ampol Petroleum Limited was founded in 1936 as the Australian Motorists Petrol Company, created as an Australian-owned response to concerns about foreign control of petrol pricing and supply. It was renamed Ampol Petroleum Ltd in 1949 and grew into one of Australia’s best-known fuel brands, expanding through service stations, terminals and refining interests during the post-war decades. Ampol later merged with Caltex Oil Australia in 1995, and the Ampol name disappeared for a time before being revived in 2020 when Caltex Australia rebranded itself back to Ampol. It is a major Australian petroleum, fuel marketing and service-station company.
