HISTORY
Australian Guarantee Corporation Limited, usually known as AGC, was one of Australia’s major finance companies, specialising over time in consumer lending, motor vehicle finance, equipment finance, insurance and business finance. Founded in the 1920s, it grew into a nationally significant non-bank lender and became closely associated with the Bank of New South Wales, later Westpac, which progressively increased its ownership before acquiring the rest of the company in 1988. By the late twentieth century AGC was a well-known name in Australian retail and commercial finance, and parts of its business were later sold by Westpac to GE in 2002, while other operations were absorbed into Westpac’s own finance businesses.
