HISTORY
G. J. Coles & Coy. Limited was one of Australia’s most important retail companies, founded by George James Coles after he opened the first Coles variety store in Collingwood, Melbourne, in 1914. The business grew rapidly from low-priced variety stores into a national chain, later moving into supermarkets and other retail formats, and became a household name across Australia. In 1985 G. J. Coles & Coy. merged with Myer, becoming Coles Myer in 1986, and the Coles business later became part of Wesfarmers in 2007.
