HISTORY

John Fairfax Limited was one of Australia’s most important newspaper and publishing companies, with roots going back to 1841, when John Fairfax acquired the Sydney Herald, which became the Sydney Morning Herald the following year. The Fairfax business was formally known as John Fairfax & Sons from 1856, and over the next century it grew into a major media group built around the Sydney Morning Herald, later adding titles such as the Australian Financial Review and, in time, The Age. By the date of this 1979 certificate, it was already a leading Australian media company in its long family-controlled era, before the financial upheavals of the late 1980s and early 1990s.
