HISTORY

This is not a company share certificate but a government-backed bank stock certificate issued by the Rural Bank of New South Wales, a state-owned bank created in 1933 from the surviving rural and housing business of the old Government Savings Bank of NSW. Its original role was to support farmers and rural communities, and from 1947 it was also authorised to operate a General Bank Department, which is the department named on this certificate. By the time this certificate was issued in 1973, the Rural Bank was an established NSW government financial institution, still operating under that name until it was reconstituted as the State Bank of New South Wales in 1981. This certificate records $2,000 of 8½% inscribed stock maturing on 31 October 1980, and the text makes clear it was issued only as evidence of ownership and was not transferable or negotiable.
