HISTORY
The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited, better known as BHP, was founded in 1885 to work the rich silver, lead and zinc deposits at Broken Hill in western New South Wales. Over time it expanded far beyond its original mine, becoming a major force in steelmaking, then later into a global resources company involved in commodities such as iron ore, coal, copper, petroleum and other minerals. In 2000 the company became BHP Limited, and in 2001 it merged with Billiton to form BHP Billiton, later simplified back to BHP. Historically, it is best described as one of Australia’s most important mining and industrial companies.
