HISTORY
The Commercial Bank of Australia Limited was a major Australian bank founded in 1866 in Melbourne, where it remained headquartered in Collins Street for its entire independent history. It grew into one of the country’s significant retail and commercial banks and also operated in New Zealand. Its independent life ended when it merged with the Bank of New South Wales in 1982 to form Westpac Banking Corporation, making it an important predecessor in Australian banking history.
