HISTORY
The Mercantile Mutual Insurance Company Limited was a long-established Australian insurance and financial services company founded in 1878. It operated for well over a century as a mutual insurer, becoming a familiar name in Australian insurance before a major change in 2001, when it became part of ING Australia. Its later insurance business was eventually absorbed into other brands, including OnePath, so the original Mercantile Mutual name disappeared, but it remains an important part of Australian insurance history and is also remembered as the naming sponsor of the Mercantile Mutual Cup in Australian domestic cricket during the 1990s.
