HISTORY
The Myer Emporium Limited was the corporate vehicle behind the Myer department-store group, which grew from Sidney Myer’s first Bendigo store in 1900 into one of Australia’s biggest retail chains. The company itself was incorporated in 1925 in a reconstruction to acquire Myer’s (Australia) Ltd, and by the 1960s it was a major Melbourne-based retail business with department stores, manufacturing interests, and finance activities. This 1964 document is not a share certificate but a registered unsecured note certificate, showing Myer raising debt capital at 7% rather than issuing equity. The company remained a major independent retailer until its later merger with G. J. Coles & Coy, creating Coles Myer in 1985.
