HISTORY
The National Bank of Australasia Limited was one of Australia’s major colonial-era banks, founded in 1858 in Melbourne and expanding into a substantial intercolonial and later national banking network. By the time of this 1980 certificate it was still operating under its historic name as a long-established Australian trading bank, but it was close to the end of its separate existence: on 1 October 1981 it merged with the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney to form what became National Australia Bank. This certificate therefore comes from the final phase of the old National Bank of Australasia as an independent institution.
