HISTORY

This is a municipal inscribed stock certificate issued by the Sydney County Council, the public authority that ran much of Sydney’s electricity supply network in the 20th century. Formed in 1935, the Council took over the City of Sydney’s electricity operations, later focused mainly on power distribution after generation functions were shifted to the Electricity Commission in the 1950s, and remained a major electricity authority until it was replaced by Sydney Electricity in 1991. This 1979 certificate reflects that role: it records a fixed-interest council loan investment of $3,000 at 7.25%, maturing on 1 October 1985, rather than equity ownership in a private business.
