HISTORY
Tooheys Limited was one of Australia’s best-known brewing companies, founded in Sydney in 1869 by the Toohey brothers and built into a major New South Wales brewer as demand for locally made beer grew in the late 19th and 20th centuries. The business expanded from its early Darling Harbour origins to the Standard Brewery at Surry Hills and later to Lidcombe, and by the time of this 1978 stock certificate it was an established listed brewing company with a substantial shareholder base and interstate registry arrangements. Soon after, in 1980, Tooheys merged with Castlemaine Perkins to form Castlemaine Tooheys, so this certificate comes from the last phase of Tooheys as a separate listed company.
